Teach me piano” is the type of phrase we would likely ask a professional when we hear them playing. It is an amazing musical instrument that has withstood the test of time, and it is as popular as ever today. It may seem like a vast mountain to climb or a complex road to travel for those of us that are new. There are a few basic tips we can utilize very early on to help with the learning process.

One of the first things is always to keep things simple. We can make the learning process substantially more effective by breaking down a complicated lesson. Normally, we may try to do everything we can at once and do them perfectly. While aiming for perfection is an admirable thing, it tends to happen in steps while we learn and refine our talent. When starting out, simplicity is the key!

When it comes to playing the piano with both hands, it could feel overwhelming initially. Remember as mentioned to keep it simple. Even if you play the same key or just one tune with your left hand while focusing on your right, that is fine. Getting used to this will allow us to spot more opportunities to expand our ability.

Think about it as we would a video game. They are normally played with both hands. It is generally a fun activity and this is what propels us to keep playing. By doing this, we get used to using both hands to play the game. Eventually it reaches a point where you know what you want to do, and you are able to execute it without consciously thinking about which buttons to hit. Compared to the piano, it is fairly similar. This brings us to another point.

The next time you think “teach me piano” after hearing an amazing piano player, replace that thought with “practice”. We need to practice frequently or when we have the time for it to create solid habits. The habits we create are what will guide us subconsciously while playing. The time when you will realize this, is when you are capable of playing the piano while conversing with another person. Practice is necessary to drill the point deep within the subconscious, which in turn will improve our capability.

Lastly is to start with a song or melody you enjoy. There is a greater level of interest when we enjoy something. Try to avoid overly complicated songs initially. If it is, you may be able to try playing the basic tune of that song. The objective is to increase how comfortable we are when playing the piano. If this is done, we will gradually expand our limitations over what they were and it will enable us to tackle tasks that we were previously unable to.
